Located in Georgia State, the 678 area code is a dialing code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) that forms part of the telecommunication service of the state.

Currently, the 678 area code covers 29 counties and 54 cities including Atlanta, Roswell, Alpharetta, and Smyrna. For its part, Atlanta symbolizes the main city of the state and represents a pillar for the economic and cultural activities of the region.

1. History

The original codification assigned to Georgia was the 404 area code in 1947. This prefix used to run in the entire region until the activation of the number 912, which reduced the original code to the northern half of the state.

By 1995, the prefix 404 opened the way to the introduction of the 770 area code. This number arrived as part of an overlay plan; becoming in the second codification designated to the northern portion.

For its part the 678 area code started to run on January 6, 1998; created from the dialing number 770, the activation of this second overlay made necessary ten-digit dialing across the entire Atlanta metropolitan area

More than a decade later, a new prefix would be required for this metro area. On February 26, 2010, the Georgia Public Service Commission integrated the 470 area code to the network, being the 4th prefix installed in the zone.
