The 770 area code is a telephone prefix that belongs to Georgia, including the locations of Atlanta and Alpharetta, among other locations. Also, this codification is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and cover 29 counties in North Georgia.

In the same way that the other states in the country, the existence of a diversity of area codes allows the residents to enjoy high-quality functioning. Thus, its networks provide a solid, stable, and reliable telephone network for the Georgian citizens.

1. History

Previously, in the 40s decade, Georgia was covered by the prefix 404. Then, in 1954, the codification 404 got minimized to cover half of the territory and would remain this way until the 90s decade, when the government set in motion the 706 area code. Such a code emerged as a solution to solve the number of shortages and telephonic issues in North Georgia.

Later in that decade, the Georgia Public Service Commission carried out a plan to create a new area code, which included the Atlanta suburbs; consequently, the 770 codification starting running on August 1st,1995, from a division of the 404 area code.

The 770 area code overlays the prefixes 678, set up on January 15th, 1998; and the 470, put in service on February 26th, 2010. These two codes arose from an overlay plan to improve the state's telecommunication system.

For now, the 770 area code surrounds the 404 codification. The Georgia location applies ten-digit dialing since the 770 began to operate in 1995. But, it was not until 1998, with the implementation of the 678 prefixes, that this sort of dialing became mandatory across the full metro area.
